Great Campaigns of the American Civil War

Post by kqrgcw » Sun Jul 02, 2017 1:08 pm

If anyone is interested I have all the games ( if my memory is correct) and it would be possible to play through a few of them at the Fest.

Sounds good. Or, if not we can try one of the others and just plug along.

Are you planning on doing a Campaign or just a series of scenarios?

Either way I was thinking of coming down for the opening weekend.

I would prefer a campaign, but some of the scenarios are pretty long as well.

If you are here for a few days short scenarios would probably be better.

Where appropriate I would like to use the ammo supply rules in Vol 4 "Jackson in the Valley". This gives the possibility in extended scenarios that units can run out of ammo. Ammo is replenished by being in counties with or adjacent to friendly depots and through use of rail lines back to a friendly supply source.

It helps replicate the causes of Lee retreating from the North twice.

In addition The cavalry recon rules from "The General" # 30 add to the realism of almost any scenario.

Basically while the location of all units is shown the actual details must be worked out by recon activities or actual combat. Here is how it works.

Each player uses force markers to show location of his units on map. The force display shows actual units covered to hide values and info markers.
All die rolls for recon are done in secret so honesty and integrity are key here.
There are 3 ways info is revealed; moving next to a unit (players reveal only if force is small 1-5, medium, 6-9, large 10+ and if infantry or cav.
attacking the exact info of enemy units is revealed after combat is declare to include unit type, total SP's + leaders. Player cannot withdraw from an attack, and cav probes cav unit can move up to 1/2 its rolled move that turn and then probe all enemy units within two hexes rolling on a probe table. In some cases the defender can spoof the prober and give false info. As a side rule to prevent unfair targeting of cav units no such unit can ever be lowered beyond 1 sp.

All this means a player must use is cavalry in an historic manner and no player will ever know everything about his opponent.

Never played GCACW, but it's been on my radar. This would be on my shortlist for Winterfest, so mark me "interested" even though I'm not ready to give 100% commitment this early
