So far I am:
Joint Soviet commander for GMT's Barbarossa
Chief of Staff, or some such minor role, for AW
Chief playtester for Bella Rosarum, my remake of Kingmaker

Friday pm till Tuesday lunchtime.

I was able to convinc the Postmater of my need to get off Friday. I should get there early afternoon but it will take me awhile to get Maggie settled in. Then I plan to start setting up the SPW game and helping Ron. When those are done I will get moving on setting up Here I Stand. Experienced players are more than welcome. Starting in the afternoon will be great as well. I never thought it could be done in an evening as I think most of us will be rather inexperianced. Should be a blast, like playing your first Monopoly game. I am hoping we can all have fun and maybe have a few laughs as well.

Greetings,

DavidM threw me a line on BGG and got me interested in attending the Con. I plan to drive down from Detroit on Friday, and stay thru Tuesday or Wednesday.

I am most interested in Here I Stand, Close Action, and Buffalo Wings. I can bring minis for Close Action and Buffalo Wings...

Anyone have an idea of how many ships will be involved in the Close Action battle?

Regards,

Chad Marlett

Chad:

Since we'll be the leads on both, we can set up whatever we're in the mood for!

As I've said elsewhere this year we're charting new territory. In the past we've just hung out all week and done a Monster all day, ad libbing the smaller games in the evenings. Since it was unusual to have partial week players we didn't do much scheduling ahead of time.

This year we've got significant commitments from two part time new players - you and Thomas Cadenhead -- for the first half of the fest, and at two of the regulars are also only going to be around the first half. We're trying to get things planned and set up, but even if it doesn't play out perfectly I'm really interested in both of these games.

I suspect we'll get a couple guys to join in, but if I'm not NEEDED as a player in some of those other games I'd be willing to set aside time for Buffalo Wings, Whistling Death (though I haven't touched those rules yet), and/or Flying Colors. And if no one else is in and WE decide to do, say, Trafalgar..... :D

EDIT: Just realized you said Close Action, not Flying Colors. We usually run 6, no more than 10 ships for Close Action.

Re. Close Action:

Yes! Please bring ships. They make things much more scenic. I think Dave is correct that we'll likely only have less than a dozen ships, as it looks like maybe eight players max and probably fewer.

If Here I Stand requires a specific start time, then that's what I'm in agreement with.

To bring the right minis and ship logs, can we pick a scenario in advance?

I was thinking of the following scenarios if we are going to have 4 players:

CA4: 2 British SOL vs 6 French frigates
CA22: 4 US frigates vs 4 British frigates and 1 SOL
RS10: 4 British SOL and 2 frigates vs 4 French SOL
MS9: 5 British SOL vs 4 French SOL

I've played CA22 before and it seems fairly balanced, although the US ships are pretty tough.

What does everyone think?

Chad:

I'm going to have to defer to Todd on this; but the 4 US frigates sounds like a fun time!

We played Sandy Hook twice at W'fest already and it is a good game. That's why I picked it before and I'd happily do it again. I've done it several times with groups of relative novices, who get to sail handy ships and fight good crews rather than plod along in line with the average quality herd. The problem is that we don't know how many players we're going to have. Some people say "yes" ahead and then are wrapped-up in other things and say "no." Quite a few possible players aren't on this board to answer at all.

That said, Sandy Hook is easily the most entertaining scenario for a likely number of players. We _could_ get more than nine, but I guess 5-8 players is a likely range and that would make a perfect game. I believe last time we dropped Congress and Guerriere to get down to 1 ship/player, so we must've had 7 folks at the table. We should plan to do this scenario for a first game but be open to the chances of getting enough more players to make for a bigger scenario, as it seems we just might.

We can always use additional gamers in our GMT EFS game. Right now we are working with four players. We could easily go with two more, but I think the Russians will need the most help, as it is a new system to most gamers.
