About Us

In 1998 we held our first Winterfest in Milan Ohio outside Sandusky. Being part of a widely spread group of wargamers who met at Origins and wanted another chance to game, Ron Shown suggested our first gathering. The area has dozens of hotels that are packed during summer for Cedar Point, an amusement park on Lake Erie. Ron traveled for business in the area and noted the hotels were all empty in winter and glad to have any business. We arranged special room rates and a free conference room for our first year at the Days Inn. We played Thursday-Sunday and the first year was a great success.

Years two through four were also successful, but everyone said it just wasn't long enough. For our fifth year, we decided to do an entire week and things really took off. By having a full week we were able to play monster games with 8-10 players and complete the game. Everyone loved this new model as it allowed you to come for a whole week or any part of it.

Eventually we moved the event up the road into Sandusky to be closer to restaurants and found a better site at the Sleep Inn. This year we celebrated our thirteenth year and plan on moving to an even nicer venue in 2011 at the Comfort Suites.

Being unlike a convention we do not have vendors selling product. Most guys share rooms and can attend the whole week with pass and room costs for around $250. Costs/tickets are kept as low as possible and are based on the number of attendees (we have to rent the conference room these days) that attend. We generally have a large group of seasoned players and try to have one or two large team games. We were originally a Europa series group, but have also played the Gamers OCS series, GMT's Barbarossa series and other large games. Everyone brings other small games to play on the side. There are no distractions at Winterfest. Your room is just across the hallway and we have maximum time to game. This usually means 8AM until midnight, but some night owls go until 4AM! We also do a last night group dinner party at a nice local restaurant.

Everyone enjoys Winterfest and many of us base our yearly calendar on how long since the last, and more importantly how long until the next Winterfest. Pure wargaming!
